Road & Bridge duties center on the construction and maintenance of public county roads, bridges, and rights-of-way.

Precinct System:
County Commissioners individually manage the maintenance and construction of roads and bridges strictly within the boundaries of their specific precinct.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Construction and Maintenance: Overseeing the building, repair, and ongoing maintenance of roads, bridges, culverts, and drainage structures.
  • Infrastructure Management: Establishing systems for properly grading, paving, and draining public roads.
  • Supervision: Managing road and bridge employees, purchasing equipment, and directing daily labor operations.
  • Court Reporting: Providing regular reports detailing the status of roads and the expenditure of the county road and bridge funds.
  • Planning: Laying out new roads and discontinuing, altering, or establishing existing public rights-of-way.

In Texas, Farm to Market (FM) and Ranch to Market (RM) roads are owned and maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This includes Texas State Highways.

State vs. County Roads: Commissioners only handle county roads. If the road is a U.S. highway or a state road (like TX-6 or US-77 in the Marlin area), you will need to report the issue to the Texas Department of Transportation.

In Texas, city streets, within City limits are owned and maintained by the City.
